Turning a Hobby into a Career—Gas in the Blood

Bruno von Rotz has been interested in cars for as long as he can remember—and that’s been quite a while. Long before he got his driver’s license, he was already attending luxury and sports car shows and hill climbs, watching the greats of his era race up the mountain or lap the Hockenheimring. Professionally, he focused on computer science early on, studied at ETH Zurich, and was involved with the internet from its very beginnings.

Over the course of his career, he progressed from software engineer to company CEO, and from strategy consultant to vice president of a systems integrator. At some point, however, he’d had more than enough of mammoth projects, strategy presentations, and PowerPoint. Together with photographer Daniel Reinhard, whom he’d known since high school, he took the plunge in 2010 and founded Zwischengas AG—with a delightfully megalomaniacal mission: to capture classic cars in portraits and bring them to life through all the senses. The goal is for visitors to zwischengas.com to be able to find and experience in full depth virtually every model ever built.

This idea has grown into the most comprehensive German-language classic car platform, now also available entirely in English. As editor-in-chief, Bruno has been responsible for the editorial direction since 2010 and, together with his team, produces over 20 new articles every week. Under his leadership, the largest German-language online magazine archive dedicated to automobiles was created, featuring over 700,000 digitized pages—from “Automobil Revue” to “auto motor und sport.” Since 2015, the print edition of the annual “Zwischengas” magazine has complemented the online offering, along with the “SwissClassics Revue,” which is published six times a year.

His expertise is not limited to his own platform: Bruno’s articles have appeared and continue to appear in the *Tagesanzeiger*, *Automobil Revue*, *20 Minuten*, and *Manager Magazin*. As the initiator of the “Fantastic Plastic” exhibition, he has also made a name for himself as a specialist in the exotic world of plastic sports cars. In 2023, the Forum for Vehicle History honored his work with the “Golden Piston,” an award for people who keep vehicle history alive.

Despite all this, Bruno is no armchair enthusiast: he drives classic cars from every era himself, such as a Lotus Elan Sprint. He bought his first classic car—a Fiat 850 Sport Spider—back in the 1920s, and many more followed. He likes unconventional and unique vehicles—preferably rare and unwieldy ones—but he also loves the everyday cars of yesteryear. It is precisely this lived passion, coupled with decades of research, that lies behind every article on zwischengas.com.

Over 1,100 British-made vehicles took over an entire airfield to once again showcase what the island’s automotive industry was once capable of. The guest brand was Triumph. V2 The 1966 Cannara is considered a design anchor for the wedge car movement and won the Dean Bachelor Trophy at the 2024 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. The Cannara is currently on display in the wedge car exhibition at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. Ray Cannara was a mentee of Stroher MacMinn at the Art Center in California. He designed and built his car and drove it from Florida to California in 1966 with his mother in the passenger seat.

Anyone who has read the latest issue of the magazine "Auto Motor und Sport" will certainly be wondering whether car manufacturers should really be collecting so much data about you and what the risks of misuse might be. Whether navigation destinations, gearshift speed, braking maneuver strength or radio station selection remain hidden from the car electronics and hardly anything is forgotten, on the contrary, it is more or less frequently transmitted to the "control center". Brave new world.......

Bonhams offered 101 vehicles (including a few motorcycles, a boat and engines) at the Greenwich Concours d'Elégance on June 2, 2019. Only just under half of the value of the vehicles (USD 10.4 million) was realized, with a sales rate of 72 percent. Many cars that were offered without a reserve price were sold for well below the estimated value. Good for the buyer, bad for the consignor. This included a surprisingly large number of muscle cars, some of which came into new hands for surprisingly low prices. On October 20, 2013, Artcurial auctioned 77 vehicles in Paris for a total of 4.4 million euros or CHF 5.4 million. Between 1971 and 1989, Mercedes built the R107 and the coupé variant C107 as the 280 SL to 560 SL and 280 SLC to 500 SLC respectively. Commercially, the model series was a great success and the R107 was the longest-built SL ever; the predecessors W198, R113 and the successors were all built over much shorter periods of time. The last examples of the R107 series became classics from the assembly line and today, together with their older brothers, enjoy a large fan community.
