Sven Halter is proof that you don’t have to grow up in a garage to end up constantly working on cars—at least in your mind. He came to Zwischengas in 2019 via a detour that no textbook would suggest: a trained watchmaker who eventually realized that what interested him most about mechanical watches was the ticking of the past—and exactly the same thing about classic cars.
His area of expertise within the editorial team is as unique as he is: carburetors. There isn’t a single article by Sven in which a carburetor doesn’t make an appearance somewhere, no matter how insignificant it may be to the actual topic. His colleagues whisper that he can recognize a Solex carburetor by its sound from fifty meters away—Sven himself never denies this, but likes to clarify that when it’s windy, it’s actually sixty meters.
He finds a balance to precision engineering in the grand scale: Sven is an avowed fan of ’60s American cars—the larger the displacement, the more at home he feels. It’s a contradiction he’s never quite resolved himself—watchmaker’s precision on the carburetor, a “go-for-broke” philosophy with the small-block. His column has had the same title for years: “It’s All a Matter of Attitude”—you can guess what that refers to.
Fifty years after Gilles Villeneuve’s Formula 1 debut, the first feature film about him is being released—and, of all things, it leaves out his famous Ferrari years. “Villeneuve: Rise of a Legend” chronicles his journey from snowmobiling in Quebec to Enzo Ferrari’s doorstep: the years without money, without fame, and with a trailer as his home. His son, Jacques Villeneuve, said of the trailer: “It was hard to hold back the tears.”
With the 968 CS, Porsche took a different approach than usual. Instead of going to great lengths to make a special edition lighter and sportier—but also more expensive—the company sold the “Club Sport” version for nearly 20% less than the standard production coupe. For fans, this resulted in a “true Porsche”; for critics, it was a fun car stripped of comfort and everyday practicality. Today, we know that the fans have prevailed. Our test drive makes it clear why that is the case …
Wrapping modern race cars in the style of a famous classic from the past is all the rage right now. At Le Mans four years ago, Ford fielded a fleet of GTs in the Holman-Moody look, and two years ago, Mercedes-AMG brought a modern “Red Pig” to the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps. But what do you do when, as a nineteen-time series champion, you have more iconic paint schemes than race cars on the starting grid? That's right: you just use them all. And so the Porsche 963, in the version fielded by......
Of course, there are doubters and skeptics who don't believe that self-driving cars will one day dominate our roads. The technical and regulatory challenges seem too great, and a crisis of acceptance from the consumer's perspective is even conceivable. However, it is highly likely that driverless vehicles will become widespread, because the benefits attributed to them are simply too great: Better use of road space, personal mobility for everyone (including children and grandparents), travel......
If you've ever sighed at editor updates because nothing visible changed aside from the version number, TinyMCE 8 is worth your attention. The new release not only brings a lot of fresh code under the hood but also noticeable improvements in everyday use—from load times to usability. The most noticeable change: The toolbar now responds noticeably faster, even with longer articles containing many embedded images. Anyone who regularly juggles image galleries and formatting will appreciate this in......
I found this Audi with right-hand drive and Swiss license plates on Google Street View. I'd love to give you the exact location, but it's actually right in front of my parents' house, and I don't want to publish the address publicly. That's the whole blog post—still cool, right?
In rain and snow flurries, Retro Classics Stuttgart celebrated the automotive delights and qualities that once delighted the entire region not so long ago. The vehicles on show were younger, but there were also more young car enthusiasts in the audience. All in all, the fair was a nice break and a time machine for young and old. You can find the highlights here.
They were almost lost, the pressing tools for spare parts for the Audi Sport quattro. But they were saved and so it was possible to reproduce the radiator grille, hood ventilation grille and bumpers for the rare Audi at Polyplex AG in Neunkirch. This article explains how this works.
